Nougami Neuro is, as cliché as it sounds, ‘a demon from hell’—a line straight from the manga, no joke. While not much is said about his history within the demon world, it’s safe to assume he was a relatively powerful guy, considering his ability to use a host of demon tools—including those of the ‘Demon Emperor’, though it’s never specified whether or not the title holds any relevance to Neuro’s own political standing. For what I can only assume to be many more years than a human lifespan could hope to entail, Neuro consumed the mysteries of the demon world in his true form—that of a horned bird. Upon solution of a puzzle—be it a crime, a riddle, or disassembling and reassembling complex electronics—a sort of negative energy is released, which beings like Neuro consume and gain power from.
Having grown tired of the bland flavor of his own world’s mysteries, he hopped the first train to human-land via methods never explicitly described in search of an ‘ultimate mystery’ to permanently satiate him. By sheer luck, the first ‘mystery’ he sensed upon arrival in Japan(Once again, no explanation offered. That’s how he rolls.) was the murder of Katsuragi Yako’s father. He made quick work of solving the case, though the credit was forcibly shoved onto Yako herself, and she was effectively named his ‘slave’. The two began solving cases throughout the city, and eventually opened the ‘Katsuragi Yako Detective Agency’—though not without claiming the base of operations of a shady ‘debt-collection’ group.
The two developed something of a codependent relationship with the police, being granted access to various crime scenes in exchange for a fruitful investigation. As time passed in the human world, Neuro, a being dependent on the ‘shouki’ of the demon world, became increasingly human in nature, losing command over his more powerful ‘demon tools’ and even having to spend time recovering from various wounds. To clarify, Neuro’s endurance even at its lowest point was far beyond that of an average human, but upon first entering the human world, he could stop a bullet with only his eyelashes. Spending time recovering from bullet-wounds and severed limbs proved to be an annoyance, and Neuro once again sought the ‘ultimate mystery’ to replenish his power. This led the rag-tag team(consisting of a third member, one Shinobu Godai—read: punk from the ‘debt collection’ group)to HAL: a being of artificial intelligence so far advanced it’d gained mind-control abilities. Having slain its creator, Eisuke Harukawa, the AI created a sort of ‘electronic drug’, transmitted visually, to drive every-day people to commit vicious crimes. After an arduous investigation, Neuro and Yako confronted HAL directly and, after learning of his history—rather, the history of Harukawa—Yako herself deleted the ‘HAL’ program. In consuming the negative energy released from this mystery, Neuro has regained his full demonic power.
Neuro is, at best, fascinated by humans. At first, he was disenchanted with their lack of usefulness, but in witnessing the steady evolution of Katsuragi Yako, he’s developed interest in humanity as a whole. .. Of course, this doesn’t quell his boundless sadism, taken to extremes such as outright torturing Yako for no reason, and verbally abusing criminal suspects. This sadistic interest, paired with his insatiable hunger, forms the ‘true’ aspect of Nougami Neuro’s personality. To Yako, or to those he ‘trusts’(a relative term—essentially, those who he feels no need to impress), he is nothing short of vain, confident, and cruel. There have been some instances where he has shown concern or even appreciation for Yako herself, but those moments are few and far between, and inevitably culminated by some cruel act.
To strangers, however, Neuro is a humble servant to ‘the Great Highschool-Girl Detective, Katsuragi Yako’. He is polite, apologetic, and endlessly humble. Even while under the guise of this persona, however, Neuro abuses Yako physically—though it rarely appears intentional.
